Yes, it is possible to manually add an aside element using the HTML editor but beware that it can end up being deleted if you use backspace inside of the slide. Even though the aside element isn't visible when you're editing the slide, the element is still technically part of the text flow.

You can actually add presentation notes by editing the html and adding an "aside":

Then when in presentation, you can press "s' to bring up the notes display.
