Presentation timer should start only when you move off the first slide
It is common when presenting to set up your computer to present and then leave it for an extended period of time. With the current presentation view, if setup is half an hour before presentation time, your timer will be at 30 minutes before you’ve even begun your presentation.
By default, the timer should only start once you’ve moved off the first slide.
(At least having the option to make the timer behave in this way would make it usable for me.)
We just rolled out a few major changes to the speaker view timer. Here’s what’s new:
- The timer is initially paused and starts on first navigation
- There are controls for manually starting/pausing/resetting the timer
- You can specify a time limit to see a countdown
- We added a progress bar that shows your slide progress
- If you have a countdown the progress bar has a thin line indicating the remaining time, so you can see if you’re falling behind
Let us know what you think!

Glad to hear you like the dual progress bars! I tried at least ten different ways of visualizing the correlation between remaning time/slides so it's good to hear the final version makes sense visually.
I'll comment here again once we carry these changes over to the offline reveal.js speaker view.

May I just say that the new dual progress bars are *genius*.
How awesome is that for seeing at a glance the relationship between the number of slides left and the time remaining.
<3 it!

Ah, just saw your follow-up comment about it not being available in the exported speaker view yet. No worries; I already had patches to mine, I can just patch it manually in the meanwhile :)

Hey Hakim, just had a look at the presentation view updates – they’re awesome! Can’t wait to use this in my next talk (next week in Singapore – https://ar.al/2019/03/29/upcoming-talks-april/)
One question: am I doing something wrong or is the new speaker view not included in presentation exports. I seem to be getting the old one.

Ah, I should mention that those changes aren’t available in the exported speaker view yet. (Our online stream-synced speaker view is different from the reveal.js speaker view used for exports but we’ll carry over the changes.)

Wow, can’t wait to try this out when I’m back from my talk in Copenhagen. I hacked some of this functionality into my exported slides but will be great to have as default functionality; thank you :)

Sounds great, thank you, Hakim.
Slides.com/reveal.js is awesome. Will write up my experiences once these talks are over :)
